What is a spiral staircase?
A spiral staircase is characterized by its radial steps, which connect two floors and wind 360° around the center of the structure. If the spiral is less than 360°, the definition no longer refers to a spiral staircase, but to an arched spiral staircase.
The inside of a spiral staircase allows a certain degree of flexibility in its design. It can be designed with a curved inner stringer, a curved inner saddle, a supporting handrail or a newel.
Difference between a spiral staircase and a spiral staircase
The difference between a spiral staircase and a spiral staircase lies in the supporting structure. Both types of staircase are characterized by a 360° spiral. While the center of the spiral staircase is free – this is referred to as the eye of the spiral staircase – a spiral staircase is constructed around a central tube.
The latter therefore saves space, while a spiral staircase allows more flexibility and creative freedom in terms of design and construction.
